for everyone

It has become like a plague that swept the whole world. Social networking sites have captured the hearts and minds of many people. These sites have been the most innovative and techy avenue to gain more friends and to connect with people in the four corners of the world. These sites are based on making friends and sharing bits of information about one’s self.

These can be very enticing as you can be able to express yourself while making some friends online. However, as good as it may seem these social networking sites can be an easy access for fraud, usually something to do with identity theft. Thieves lurk in social networking sites to take advantage of people’s identities shared in the sites. Now more than ever, we all have to be cautious of what we place in our accounts. You have to always put up your own identity theft shield.

Facebook, Twitter, Friendster, Myspace are just some of the leading social networking sites that many have personal accounts with. Although these sites have exhausted their ability and all possibilities to put up security features against identity fraud and theft, there are still identity thieves that gained access to many personal accounts.

The “friends of friends” principle of these sites can definitely increase your circle of friends. Communicating is less difficult as you can exchange ideas and opinions through blogs, chats, and instant messaging. However, there are those with less-than- friendly intentions that may exploit and spoil another person’s identity just to take advantage and gain benefits.

Many crimes have been documented related to identity theft in social networking platforms. Teens are the most numbers of victims of identity thieves in these sites. You should inform your children of the dangers of these sites and educate them about identity theft protection.
